Final Round of 5

Manisy, Godin Share Top Honors

Michael Manisy of Otter River and Class A player Paul Godin of Bedford tied for 1st-2nd place, scoring 4-1 in a field of 30 players. Manisy, who opted not to play the final round because of a family commitment, had defeated Godin in the fourth round but allowed the latter player to catch him in total points with a win in the round. Manisy, with two wins against "A" players, became a Class A himself after the event was rated by the USCF.

Congratulations also to Robert King of Worcester, Bruce Felton of Fitchburg, and Brian Biglow of Leominster who all tied for 3rd place with 3.5 points.

Chess Club Holds Blind Draw Tourney

Two Wachusett CC Players Compete in Continental Open - King a prize winner!

Robert King of Worcester played in the Under 1900 section of the 40th Continental Open this past weekend in Sturbridge and tied for 3rd place with a score of 4.5-1.5, winning $251.50. Had he won instead of drawing his final-round game, he would tied for second. As it was, the player who won second prize was given a full-point bye in the first round and then took a half-point bye in the final round. By doing so, he won $1006!

Michael Manisy of Otter River played in the Under 1700 and scored a credible 4-2.

Blitzers From The East

Blitz players came from far and wide to compete in the Wachusett Chess Club Blitz Championship (G/10) and met with some success.  Former club champion Martin Laine of Lunenburg tied for the championship with master Gregory Kaden (regular: 2207, quick: 2056) who came all the way from Wellesley.  They both scored 7/8.  Paul Godin travelled from Bedford and finished 3rd in the relatively small field of 18.

Martin Laine handed club champion Tony Cesolini his first club loss ever.  Tony remains undefeated though at the standard G/110 and even at G/20.

Unsafe At Any Speed*

We thought we might be safe from the undefeated Tony Cesolini if we reduced the time to G/20, but in fact he was even better at the faster time control, winning all 4 of his games and the Wachusett Quick Chess Championship to go with his winning of the "classical" club championship.  I played Tony for the first time and I don't think he even broke a sweat as he rolled right over me...

So congratulations to Tony on his winning of the 2nd of 3 club championships (the 3rd championship, the blitz championship, will be held on Wednesday June 30th).  Congratulations also to Michael Manisy of Baldwinville for his 2nd place finish and Robert King and Thayer Aletheia-Zomlefer who tied for 3rd.  Thayer is visiting all the way from Phoenix!

Also, congratulations to the following players whose quick rating improved by 50 points or more:

Michael Manisy           +96

Eduardo Valadares        +74

Thayer Aletheia-Zomlefer +51

The Wachusett Chess Club was well represented this weekend at the 79th Massachusetts Open.  Fourteen club members participated with many notable results.

SEETHARAMAN GANESAN of Grafton made the gutsy decision to play in the Open section in spite of being the lowest rated player in the section by 615 points!  To top it off, he managed a draw against candidate master Winston Huang!

ROBERT J KING of Worcester tied for 2nd place in the 3-day U2000 section.

BRUCE FELTON of Fitchburg took 1st place in the 1-day U2000 section by winning all 4 of his games!  Bruce increased his regular rating to within 6 points of his all-time high and improved his quick rating to a new all-time high!

MICHAEL SUTOMARAJ MANISY of Templeton had quite the weekend.  On Saturday he took 1st place in an Octo section by winning all 3 of his games!  On Sunday, he played in the 1-day U1600 section and won 3 games out of 4 to tie for 2nd place in the section.  6 wins and 1 loss – not a bad weekend of chess!  In the process he raised his rating by exactly 100 points!

BRIAN G BIGLOW of Leominster tied for 2nd place in the Saturday Octo losing only his final round game to fellow club member Mike Manisy.

GAIL SANDRA LINGNER of Fitchburg tied for 3rd place in the Monday Octo section.

Congratulations to all!

The 79th Mass. Open will be held in Leominster at the beautiful Four Points by Sheraton.

Goodbye and Good Luck to Paul Giovino

Congratulations to Paul Giovino who has accepted a new job in Rhode Island.

Paul's first tournament at the Wachusett Chess Club was in March-April 2002, when he competed at age 16 in the club championship prelims and tied for fourth place. He gained a provisional rating of 1600 based on five games played. The club at the time was meeting at First Church Unitarian in Leominster. In the subsequent club championship in April through June 2002, Paul finished fifth out of eight players and boosted his rating to 1636. Since joining the club eight years ago, Paul has participated in nearly 75 USCF-rated tournaments. He was club "B" Division champion in 2005, co-champion in 2006, and again champion in 2007. His most recent tournament victory at the club was the George O'Rourke Memorial, which ended in March 2010. As a result, he gained a Class A rating for the first time in his career.

A key to Paul's success appears to be the fact that he always wore shorts - spring, summer, fall, and winter!  In his new job, he'll be in an office environment wearing long pants so his success is less than certain.  But seriously, we will miss Paul and wish him the best of luck in his new endeavor!

Michael Glinski Jr. of Hudson, New Hampshire, former editor of Chess Horizons and a longtime member of the Wachusett Chess Club in Fitchburg, Mass., died Saturday, April 10, in Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua. He was 51. He was born March 26, 1959 in Leominster, Mass., the son of Michael Glinski Sr. and Furinda C. (Montaquila) Glinski. He attended Julie Country Day School in Leominster and graduated from Leominster High School in 1977. He then served four years in the U.S. Army as a computer technician. Mike had worked many years for the former NEC Computer Systems in Boxborough, Mass. as vice president of operations. He was later president and chief operating officer for Vibren Technologies Inc., also in Boxborough. He lived many years in Fitchburg and became very much interested in exploring New Hampshire history after he moved to Hudson three years ago.

While in Fitchburg, he was a member of the Wachusett Chess Club in the 1980s and early 1990s. He took part in the club's "A" division championship in 1992 and 1993. He held a Class A "quick" rating as well as a Class A correspondence rating. In 1990, he became editor of MACA's then-bimonthly magazine Chess Horizons and raised the publication to a new level of excellence before handing over the editorial reigns to fellow Wachusett Chess Club member Erik Zoltan the following year. Among his highlights was attending with his father the 1990 U.S. Open in Jacksonville, Florida, where he was greeted by USCF officials as one of the leading chess journalists in the country. Mike is survived by his longtime partner Carol A. Winters of Hudson; a daughter, Jessica Glinski of Lunenburg, Mass.; and a brother, John Glinski. Wachusett Chess Club Championship Prelims

Round 2 of 5

Mark Daley - Unstoppable?!

George Mirijanian writes:

The second round of the club championship prelims saw Mark Daley of New Ipswich, NH chalk up his second upset win in a row against a Class A opponent. This time his victim was 1999 club champion Geoff LePoer of Westford. Is there any stopping this "hot" player from the Granite State? The only other upset was George Miller of Ashburnham winning a tactical free-for-all against Martin Laine of Lunenburg. It was probably the best game of the night.

Close Calls Aplenty!

The first round of the championship prelims saw many near-upsets, a pair of "upset draws" (by Brian Biglow and Michael Manisy), and one actual upset (by Mark Daley).  The results table below doesn't show it, but the following lower rated players made their higher rated opponents sweat into the endgame: Tom Fratturelli, Mike Sheridan, Max Sewell, and Wayne Steadman (in the last game to finish).  No one will be taking any opponents for granted!

Paul Giovino of Lunenburg wins George O'Rourke Memorial

Becomes USCF-rated Class A player for first time in career!

Paul Giovino reached a milestone in winning the 30 player George O'Rourke Memorial tournament. By scoring 4.5-0.5 and gaining 75 USCF rating points, the Lunenburg player became a nationally rated Class A player for the first time in his chess-playing career.  His timing couldn't be better as the club championship prelims start next week.  Congratulations to Paul for his great achievement!  Congratulations also to Geoff LePoer of Westford for finishing 2nd and also to George Mirijanian of Fitchburg, and Larry Gladding and Ken Gurge both of Leominster, for tying for 3rd.
